July was all about headshots for Doug Jackson Photography. I spent two days at two very different companies photographing their staff.
Both companies intended to use the shots for internal CVs, intranet and client facing purposes.
I do find that whereas creative businesses, such as architects and new media professionals, often like quite simple and minimal looking photography, industrial and construction companies tend to want punchy and high-key images. I suppose this might be due to some people perceiving the industrial subjects as less interesting, and therefore need more ‘pep’. The bright colours of the PPE and the bright machines also tend to suit this approach.
Industry Portraits
With the industrial portraits, the requirements were quite different. We went for punchy portraits in full bold colour. This confident approach suited the companys existing branding style and the location gave plenty of opportunity for unique and relevant set-ups. All of this is posed, with care taken to choose clean or relevant backgrounds, and to make a clear demarcation between office and site staff.

Architect Portraits
After a brief consultation regarding the correct style/feel of the image, the first batch were shot for an architectural firm. They wanted clean simple, natural monochromatic images that would be used alongside some existing shots that were shot in this style. So armed with my trusty 50mm 1.8, and leaving aside my usual light stands I got to work. We set up a few of these pics but some were just captures as they happened.
