I did some work for a brand-new magazine called Very last week. This is a magazine created by the retail group Shop Direct, formerly know as Littlewoods.
The feature was called Fashion Insider and is basically about the style of clothes that members of the public like to wear. I often shoot a similar style feature, Your Style for Living Magazine. With Living Magazine, I try to provide a selection of upright and wide pictures. With Very they just needed a choice of uprights.
Very provided a comprehensive brief which is always a good start. Michelle (nervously) welcomed my assistant Helen and I into her home in Nunthorpe, near Middlesbrough.
We sat down for ten minutes to discuss what we’d be doing and the type of shots I’d like to get. Once we were working, Michelle soon relaxed and her great smile meant bright and shiny pictures were a breeze.
We did a few set-ups in the house, and got some shots on the decking in the garden just before the rain came. Michelle was great fun and we ended up chatting so much that the job stopped feeling like work!
Commercial photography can be quite a physical and lonely job sometimes, particularly on the industrial or construction side. Taking on a PR commission like this is completely the opposite, fun, social and bubbly.
This is one of the great things about being a freelance photographer - variety.
