Despite working as a freelance photographer undertaking commercial, industrial and architectural projects I still do shifts for newspapers working as a press photographer. Two of these papers and the ones I most commonly work for are the Northern Echo and the Darlington and Stockton Times. I really enjoy the fast paced nature of press photography and it forced you to be focused, flexible and also self disciplined. You generally have very limited time to create an image that has to illustrate a story that can be anything to the victim of an armed robbery to children at a school who have raise £50.00 for charity.
Not only is the average shift for any newspaper unpredictable but you get a chance to meet and chat to a really broad spectrum of people. As with lots of jobs people skills are vital in press photography. Getting the picture you want, or you know the editor wants, is often far easier when you explaining to the person your photographing what it is your trying to achieve. Most people who I photograph are often surprised at the creativity and effort that goes into creating an image that will feature as tomorrow’s fish and chip wrapper. The fact is good images are as important as good copy and a newspaper will stand and fall by the quality of its reporters and photographers.
Here’s a selection of pictures taken in the last few months for the Northern Echo and Darlington and Stockton Times. They are in no particular order and I have simply chosen my favourites.
