I was saddened to her about the death of the actor Ian Carmichael this weekend. While I worked at the Whitby Gazette I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Ian on many occasions and found his to be a fun and witty character who was always polite and charming. He did good works in the Whitby area and helped many good causes. Im sure he will be incredibly missed in and around his home in the Esk Valley.
He made his name in films for the Boulting Brothers including Privates Progress (1956) and Im All Right Jack (1959) alongside Peter Sellers. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was successful in parts where he was cast as a loveable buffoon. On television, his role as Bertie Wooster was particularly popular with audiences. This was followed by another well-watched role as Lord Peter Wimsey in several of the BBC drama series based on the mystery novels by Dorothy L Sayers. In more recent times the actor had parts in the BBC serial Wives and Daughters in 1999 and was in The Royal on ITV as recently as last year. He was appointed an OBE in the 2003 Queens Birthday Honours List.

Sir Ian Carmichael posed for this picture in October 2007.
